THE AUTHORIZED (KING JAMES) VERSION OF THE BIBLE "The Noblest Monument of English Prose" RARE SEPARATELY PRINTED NEW TESTAMENT WITH CANNE'S CROSS REFERENCE SYSTEM FIRST EDITION ENGRAVED TITLE 1664 The New Testament [Amsterdam ?], 1664. Duodecimo printing with Marginal References by John Canne. Together with The Whole Book of Psalms Collected in English Metre by Thomas Sternhold, John Hopkins, W. Wittingham and Others, Printed Anno. 1664. No doubt printed abroad, perhaps at Amsterdam. Biblical t ext ends on Yy4. No Apocrypha. (Luke 23:51, has deeds for deed.) Catch word indicates that the Book of Psalms was printed for inclusion with this Testament. Thus while comparable to Herbert's No. 688, this separately issued New Testament is unrecorded. Full leather binding with apparent sealskin over wooden boards, with later gold metallic clasps attached. The woodcut title-border represents: above, the giving of the Law; and below, a spread eagle, and Joseph meeting Jacob. The marginal references were prepared by John Canne (d. 1667) who lived for many years abroad and was styled by John Ball the leader of the English Brownists in Amsterdam.' His work represents the first full apparatus of carefully selected marginal references to appear in a King James Bible. Anderson (Vol. i, p. 559) mentions a quarto edition of this Bible printed in Amsterdam in 1644; D..B. gives 1647 as the date of the first authenticated edition. In 1653 he received an exclusive licence for seven years 'to print a Bible with annotations, being his own work, and that no man unless appointed by him, may print the said notes, either already printed or to be printed. Book was delivered and was wrapped very well to prevent any damage during transport. Book was as described. Would definitely order again from this seller !! I thought shipping was expensive , the book is big and heavy so maybe that is what it costs to ship. Overall very happy with my purchase. Thank you
