The collected works of Sulpicius Severus, including his sacred 'Chronicle', the life of Saint Martin of Tours, alongside three dialogues and letters. Severus was a Christian writer active during the first century, a native of Aquitania. Born to noble parents, Severus was influenced by his mentor, Saint Martin, to devote his wealth to the poor, and dedicating his life to the vision of God. 'Chronicle' is an extensive summary of sacred history, from the beginning of the world to Severus' lifetime. His 'Life' of Saint Martin was an immensely popular work during the Middle Ages, and did much to establish a great reputation of the man. Cataloguing a series of miracles, the work is not a traditional biography. CONDITION In a full calf binding, rebacked with the original boards restored. Bumping and a little loss of leather to the extremities. Boards are rubbed with some light marks and discolouration. A small amount of loss to the tail of the rear board. Label to the front paste down. Crack to the head of the rear paste down. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are age-toned with some spots. Ink smudge and two stamps to the engraved title. Small amount of worming to the head of the text, from page 177 to end, only very marginally affecting words.
