Gregory the Grand was Pope from 590 tp 604and is famous for instigating the first recorded large-scale mission from Rome to convert the Anglo-Saxons in England to Christianity. This analysis of his life and work is by Denys de St. Marthe, a Benedictine monk who spent most of his career as an administrator and writer in and around Rouen, France. This volume has some provenance with a notation on the title page in red ink, “Ex Libris Monasterii S. Juliani Turonensis/Ordinis S. Benedicti Congregationis S. Mauri/Catal. Inscript” and a stamp on the title page from “Saint Augustine/Lormoy”, a monastery in Lormoy, France. It is in very good condition, with some light foxing and occasional spot as well as edge wear from reading and handling.Good Condition: 4to: full leather with ridged spines heavily decorated with gilt between bands and gilt lettering in the second band: head and tail missing: cracked at front hinge of spine but still attached; rear hinge beginning to crack but intact: peeling of leather front edge: exposed corners with loss of leather and rounded: bottom rear corner loss of leather: scuffed edges erasing/removing the gilt design on the edges: red speckled edges to the block: marbled endpapers in front Complete: end papers at rear missing free endpaper: evidence of paper label on ffep: lettering in purple ink on free spare: writing and library stamps on title page: occasional foxing: slight yellowing of edge of block from handling: very occasional marginalia: “Histoire de S.
