Description
" The Comedies of Terence, with the Translation and Remarks of Madame Dacier " This elegantly printed 18th-century edition presents the comedies of the Roman playwright Terence, accompanied by French translations and scholarly commentary from the renowned classicist Anne Dacier. This particular volume (Volume II) contains the Latin text of Heautontimorumenos ( The Self-Tormentor ), one of Terence’s most admired plays, alongside Dacier's French translation and notes. A striking red-and-black title page and an engraved portrait adorn the book, reflecting the typographical elegance typical of early Enlightenment publishing in the Netherlands. Dacier’s annotations aim to both clarify the text and defend its moral and literary value in light of French neoclassical standards. Table of Contents (Extracted and Simplified): Heautontimorumenos ( The Self-Tormentor ) Latin text: Publii Terentii Heautontimorumenos French title: L’Heautontimorumenos de Terence Titulus / Le Titre (stage directions, performance history) Remarques (notes and commentary in French) (Note: The book focuses solely on this single comedy in its entirety, rather than a compilation of multiple works, making this volume uniquely centered on this one play.) Summary: Heautontimorumenos is a Roman comedy originally written by Terence in 163 BCE, adapted from a lost Greek play by Menander. The play explores themes of self-punishment, parental control, and the tension between duty and affection. The title refers to a man who punishes himself severely for having previously expelled his son for falling in love. As the narrative unfolds, misunderstandings are gradually resolved through honesty, friendship, and compassion, culminating in reconciliation. Terence's language is known for its elegance and psychological realism, and Madame Dacier’s detailed notes further enrich the reader’s understanding by comparing Terence's themes to those of Greek origins and 17th-century French values. This volume serves as both a literary artifact and a classical education tool. Pages: 500 Size: 6" x 3.5" x 1.2" See other $0.99 items

I buy from this seller all the time . I so appreciate sellers like this. So on top of their business. The prices are right. Communication is perfect and the turnaround. Sometimes I pay and an hour hasn’t gone by and a shipping label is created and out it goes the next morning, the care taken to make sure the items, mostly containing paper and very old arrive in perfect condition

The book was beautiful and in wonderful condition! The shipping was quick and the packaging was secure. The book was maybe even better than described (I am not a well versed collector, but to me this was absolutely great for how old it was), and was overall a super price for the book! Great seller and a wonderful experience!
