A biography on the royalist churchman, Dean of St. Paul's, John Barwick. Illustrated with a frontispiece, and one plate, portraits depicting the two brothers. This is an insightful biography on Barwick, and offers a fascinating look at the English Civil War and Restoration. Barwick spend the Interregnum moving around in royalist circles, and corresponded with Charles, relaying to him the designs and attempts of the rebels, and conveying Charles' orders. Originally written in Latin by John's brother, Peter Barwick, here translated into English by Hilkiah Bedford. Peter was a one of the King's physicians in ordinary,and was known for his treatment of smallpox. His house was burned down during the Great Fire of London. CONDITION In a full calf binding. Externally, a little worn, with some rubbing and loss of leather to the spine and extremities, heavier to the rear board. Lacking most of the spine label. Minor bumping to the extremities. Some marks to the boards. Small ring mark to the front board and small damp stain to the rear board. Joints are starting but firm. Front hinge is tender, rear hinge is starting. Ink inscription to the front paste down. Small match of worming to the paste downs and endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean, with a few scattered spots and handling marks.
