Although published anonymously, this is the work of Scottish author and biographer John Campbell, who also had a diplomatic career as her majesty's agent to one of the lesser American colonies. An entertaining history based around the varied life and diplomatic career of Juan Guillermo, the First Duke de Ripperda, with numerous amusing anecdotes drawn from the Moroccan and Spanish courts, alongside a a running commentary on the character of the two nations. In the final section, comparisons are drawn between the Spanish and English courts of the day. This work focuses on the 1715 to 1736 period of the Baron's life from the acceptance of his role as Dutch ambassador to Madrid, to the end of his life in Morocco. Featuring a two page publisher's advertisement to the rear, and a contemporary inscription to the front free endpaper, 'To: Arnoll'. ESTC reference no. Marks to front and rear pastedown. Contemporary owner's inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright, with the odd mark.
