In the original French. The memoirs of Guy Joli, also spelt as Joly. Joli was a French magistrate of the seventeenth century. He was an advisor at the Chatelet de Paris, and private secretary to Cardinal de Retz. As a supporter of the monarchy, Joli escaped France with Retz during the Fronde, a series of civil wars in France between 1648 and 1653. When Mazarin died, Joli and Retz returned to France. Retz and Joli eventually broke their friendship, accusing one another of ingratitude. In his memoirs, Retz presents a very different version of Joli than the author presents of himself here. The title page of Volume III reads as 'Memoires de Claude Joli, Chanoine de Notre-Dame, et de Madame la Duchesse de Nemours'. Bookplate of the Reverend F. Hutcheson to the front paste down of Volume II. CONDITION In a full calf binding. Externally, generally smart, a little rubbed. Minor bumping to the extremities. A small amount of loss to the head of the spines of Volumes I and III. Spines are discoloured. A few light marks to the boards and spines. A little loss of leather to the boards of Volume I, and to the rear board of Volume II. Bookplate to the front paste down of Volume II is detaching. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very lightly age-toned and clean. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

Excellent in every respect; much better than originally described and pictured. The shipping was exceptionally fast, and the books arrived precisely on schedule. The packaging was both robust and thoughtful, which always makes a most distinct difference. I am grateful for this great value and for your having accepted my offer. Thank you so much for a truly pluperfect transaction.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
