First published in 1840, this colourful memoir is the work Cibber is best remembered for, notable for its conversational, rambling and anecdotal tone, and deliberate narrative inaccuracies. The text focuses on Cibber's life as a young actor in Drury Lane in the 1690s, and discusses the actors and managers he associated with. ESTC reference no. T73426 With an armorial bookplate to the front pastedowns, and the contemporary owner's inscription of Jeffery Amherst, 1st Baron Amherst, to each front pastedown. Amherst was Commander-in-Chief of the Forces in the British Army, credited as the architect of Britain's successful campaign to conquer New France during the Seven Years' War. Housed in a custom cloth slip case, with Thomas Gainsborough's portrait of Amherst to the front board. A memorable work, praised by the usually critical Samuel Johnson as 'very entertaining and very well done'. CONDITION In full calf bindings, housed in a cloth slip case. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

Excellent in every respect; much better than originally described and pictured. The shipping was exceptionally fast, and the books arrived precisely on schedule. The packaging was both robust and thoughtful, which always makes a most distinct difference. I am grateful for this great value and for your having accepted my offer. Thank you so much for a truly pluperfect transaction.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
