Complete in three volumes. Volume one is paginated separately with volumes two and three being paginated continuously. Uniformly bound in full mottled calf with gilt detail to the spine. A rare large paper copy was also issued in the same year, the present group is of the ordinary paper edition. A comprehensive autobiography of Edward Earl of Clarendon. Containing an account of his life from birth to the Restoration in 1660. Followed by his history of the Grand Rebellion, from the Restoration to his banishment in 1667. Printed from his original manuscripts, given to the University of Oxford by the heirs of the late Earl of Clarendon. Edward Hyde, the First Earl of Clarendon was an English statesman, lawyer, and historian, chief advisor to Charles I during the First English Civil War, and Lord Chancellor to Charles II until 1667, when he fell out of favour and was exiled. Volume one has two title pages. Indexes to the rear of volumes one and three. CONDITION Uniformly bound in full calf. Externally, very smart with some rubbing to the edges. Light marks to the boards, slightly heavier to the rear board of volume two. Spines are darkened. Hinges strained but still firm. Offsetting to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Stamp for, 'Cornwell House', to the front free endpapers. Small mark to the front paste-down of volume three. Internally, firmly bound. Pages age-toned but otherwise bright and clean. The odd spot and handling mark throughout. Light offsetting towards the front of the volumes. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
