The autobiography of Edward Hyde, containing an account of his life from birth to the Restoration in 1660, followed by his history of the Grand Rebellion, from the Restoration to his banishment in 1667. Hyde, the first Earl of Clarendon, was the Lord Chancellor to King Charles II from his restoration to the throne to 1667. He was a strong royalist, and wrote the influential 'The History of the Rebellion', about the English Civil War, a work which cemented him as one of the most important historians of all time. Hyde was in good favour for most of his life, before being accused of arranging the King's marriage to Catherine of Braganza whilst knowing she was barren, hoping to secure the throne for his grandchildren. He also showed contempt for the King's new mistress, and because of ill-health, his authority quickly weakened. After a few political hardships, he went into exile. Despite this fall from favour, he was the maternal grandfather of both Queen Mary II and Queen Anne, through the marriage of his daughter to King James II. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

Excellent in every respect; much better than originally described and pictured. The shipping was exceptionally fast, and the books arrived precisely on schedule. The packaging was both robust and thoughtful, which always makes a most distinct difference. I am grateful for this great value and for your having accepted my offer. Thank you so much for a truly pluperfect transaction.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
