Description

Biography of Father Antonio De Chagas , born António Da Fonseca Soares (1631- 1682), Father of the Order of Saint Francis, soldier, adventurer, and Portuguese poet. Having entered the Portuguese army as a soldier, Soares fought the Portuguese War of Restoration. During that time, he became known for his poetry. He was also involved in various love affairs and adventures, committing all sorts of excesses. In 1653, António De Chagas was forced to flee to Bahia in Brazil, persecuted by the justice for having killed a rival on a duel. A few years later, he returned to Portugal, but continued to live a dissolute and military life. In 1662, he embraced the Franciscan order and became Frei Antonio de Chagas, devoting the rest of his life to preach the gospel and faith with passion and fervour, so characteristic of his temper. He was very influential among his contemporaries, who were fascinated by a worldly man converted to god. Frei Antonio das Chagas, was criticized by some of his contemporaries including father Antonio Vieira and D. Francisco Manuel de Melo. Third edition. The references to Brazil (located in " Livro I " page 9 and pages 11 to 17) describe his departure from Portugal and experiences in the territory during the exile—these seemingly went unnoticed to the major Americana bibliographers such as Sabin.
