A fascinating collection of memoirs of the Duke of Sully, Prime Minister to King Henry IV of France: an important figure in the building of a strong centralised administrative system in France. Containing the history of the life and reign of Henry IV as well as de Bethune's administration under him. A very valuable collection of the history of the time and as an autobiography, despite containing various fictional pieces. Including an account of the trial of Travaillac for the murder of Henry the Great in volume six, as well as a thorough index. Illustrated with a folding map of France and a two portraits to the first volume. With British biographer James Pope-Hennessey's bookplate to the front pastedown. ESTC Reference N21986 CONDITION In a full calf binding. Externally smart with some shelf wear and a slight rubbing to the leather, as well as a minimal loss to the head and tail of the spine. The spine to all volumes is slightly darkened. With James Pope-Hennessy's bookplate to the front pastedown to each volume. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor faint scattered spotting affecting particularly the leaves of plates and the endpapers. Otherwise, the pages are generally clean throughout with only a faint age toning, as usual due to the type of paper used. Illustrated with a folding map of France and a two portraits to the first volume. The map with a marginal tear and the usual minor chipping. This now sits alongside a companion volume, another work of Worcestershire historian and antiquarian, John Noak. I very much looking forward to reading it.
