Three parts in two volumes. Translated from the original French. Uniformly bound in full tree calf with gilt detail. The interesting memoirs of François Baron de Tott, the eighteenth century French military officer. As a lieutenant in the French army, he travelled to Constantinople in the Ottoman Empire where he was to learn the language and customs of the Turkish people. He was later asked to do the same for Crimea, alongside aiding the rebellion against Russia. Volume one is missing the title page. In its place, there is a half title page for 'Part the Second'. There is no half title page in volume two. With a bookplate for, 'Sir John Eden Bar', to the front paste-downs. CONDITION Uniformly bound in full tree calf binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. Slight darkening to the spine. Light marks to the boards. Offsetting to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Bookplate to the front paste-down of both volumes. Closed tear to the front free endpaper of volume two. Hinges strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Volume one is missing the title page. Spotting and offsetting throughout, heavier towards the front and rear of the books, however the text is still bright and clear. Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.
