James Buchanan (1716/17–1771) was an eighteenth-century schoolmaster, grammarian, and maker of pronouncing dictionaries who played an important part in the contemporary movement to “fix” the English language. Buchanan himself was not a spelling reformer, but extended the more general interest in spelling to a concern for regulating pronunciation . Buchanan promotes the idea of an English grammar school especially for the middle classes, on the grounds that his audience needed English before Latin. Provenance: Silas Engles (1781-1827) first made his appearance upon the public stage in 1803, as a Philadelphia journeyman printer. Newspapers of that city mention a “Silas Engles, junr.,” who belonged to the local Typographical Society. By 1804, he had joined forced with a fellow Philadelphia printer, to establish “Engles and Stiles,” who were soliciting subscriptions for book publishing in that place. Journeyman printers: After completing their apprenticeships, journeyman printers were free to move employers. This facilitated the spread of printing to areas that were less print-centred. First Published in 1767, this is a later edition with early American provenance. RAREA1786FNOL - 07/23 FORN-TUB-0080-BB-2505-HKREV904

Just picked up my package from Robin Rare Books and let me start by saying WOW!!! Book as advertised for sure. the value of the book certainly dictated some care in shipping but never did I think to this extent. The packaging was incredible. bigger box than needed at first thought but after opening based on the care and multiple layers of packing It would have survived a Tank rolling over it. Very grateful for you listing and working with me on the book, true piece of history I will cherish

I recently discovered Folio Society books and purchased a number of them from this site to add to my library of Easton Press books. I had a positive experience with each seller. They carefully wrapped the books in packing material to prevent damage during shipping. The books arrived in the condition described. I am looking forward to reading each and every one. I recommend them all.
