An essay on the creation of a standard universal system of shorthand, by the creator of the first shorthand system to be used all over the English-speaking world, Samuel Taylor. In this work, Taylor explains his system of stenography, which is known as Taylor shorthand. His system uses and alphabet of 19 letters of simplified shapes, cutting out superfluous constants and vowels in polysyllabic words. Illustrated with eleven plates. Collated, complete. CONDITION In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, the front board is held by one cord only and requires careful handling. Boards and spine are rubbed. Loss to the head and tail of the spine, and to the rear board. Light marks and discolouration to the boards. Minor bumping to the extremities. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean, with a few scattered spots. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
