Johnson, No. 72, St. paul's Church-Yard. 1794, First Edition. 420 p, full leather, 8.5 x 5.5”, 8vo. In fair condition. Boards show typical wear with light scuffing, moderate edge wear. Front and rear hinges cracked. Title label chipped at front hinge; gilt lettering overall bright and clean. Ex-library bookplate found at tail of spine. Ex-library of the Newton Theological Institution on front paste down. Front gutter split with exposed cording. Text block typically toned with moderate foxing. Water or tea dampness staining found on bottom edge of text-block, not noticeable throughout text. Binding remains intact, front hinge fragile. Joseph Priestley (1733 –1804) was an English chemist, Unitarian, natural philosopher, separatist theologian, grammarian, multi-subject educator and classical liberal political theorist. He published over 150 works, and conducted experiments in several areas of science. Priestley published three sets of Discourses, the first in London (1794), and the second and third in Philadelphia (1796 and 1797), after his emigration to the United States in 1794. The two Philadelphia sets were in turn reprinted in London, but to create the appearance of a three-volume set, the title-pages were altered. First Edition of Priestley's first published Discourses ; before publisher J. Johnson altered title page to create a three volume set with Priestley's other two later Discourses . The shipping was fast and the book was extremely well packaged. The book itself is exactly as pictured and although rare books are expected to be expensive, I was able to get a small discount that at least covered the shipping. I'm happy with my purchase, so I can say that it was a good value. I love to find old relics that kind of come full circle to find their home.
