Jean-Francois Marmontel (1723 - 1799) was a French historian and writer, a member of the Encylcopediestes movement. He studied with the Jesuits at Mauriac, he taught in their colleges at Clermont-Ferrand and Toulouse. In 1745, acting on the advice of Voltaire, he set out for Paris to try for literary success. In 1758 he gained the patronage of Madame de Pompadour, who obtained for him a place as a civil servant and the management of the official journal Le Mercure, in which he had already begun the famous series of Contes Moraux. In 1767 he published “Belisaire”, now remarkable in part because of a chapter on religious toleration which incurred the centuries of the Sorbonne and the archbishop of Paris. Complete Set. Second Edition. RARES1806CJKA - 05/20 RARES1806CKHJ - 05/25 - HKREV848

This book far exceeded my expectations! It’s in the most pristine condition of any of the old books that I own. Robins Rare Books is amazing. Always a great value, very well packaged, quick shipping and always as described. I am a repeat customer and will always check listing from this seller first when I’m in the market for an antiquarian book.

This arrived safely and it was well packaged. This is exactly as described and it included a thank you on a postcard. This was well thought out and the seller knows how to handle and ship rare books. This was worth more than it was sold for, in my opinion, and I greatly appreciate doing business with this person.
