An account of the impeachment of Henry Dundas, the 1st Viscount Melville. The impeachment was due to inquired of misappropriation of public funds by Dundas, who was treasurer of the Navy. The transaction did not cause a loss of public money, only of loss of interest, but Dundas was trialled with impeachment. Dundas was acquitted, but the trial garnered a lot of public interest, due to the dislike of Pitt and anti-Scottish sentiments of the time. Illustrated with a frontispiece. Bookplate of William Mitford of Pittshill to the front pastedown. Pitshill is a neoclassical house begun by William Mitford in 1760, generally considered to be one of the most important country houses in West Sussex. Bookplate of Francis W. Steer to the front pastedown. Steer was an antiquarian, archivist, and herald. Bookplate of the Laurence family to the recto to the front endpaper. French Laurence, a member of this family, is mentioned to a couple of pages in this work. CONDITION In a full diced calf binding. Externally, smart. Faint tidemark to the head of the front board. A few light marks to the boards and spine. Minor wear to the extremities. Two bookplates to the front pastedown, bookplate to the recto to the front endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are lightly age-toned and generally clean with some odd spots. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
