By Mary Hays and printed in Philadelphia for Byrch and Small. 1807, 510 pp, 8.5 x 5.5”, leather, 8vo. First American edition in as-is condition. Volume II only of the 3-volume set. Front board completely detached, while the back board is only attached by one thread. Rubbing to leather, primarily around the edges and corners. Front flyleaf detached. Hinges worn around front and back of book but sturdy throughout the text block. Top and bottom portions of leather are missing from the spine, as well as part of the title label. Staining to the first 15-20 pages of the book that does not prevent overall readability. Inscriptions and signatures on the front and back pastedown, front flyleaf, and title page; text block appears free of marginalia. Periodic folding of top corners of pages. Includes a damaged advertisement sheet at the end of the text block. Initials of “H.A.” are written into the fore edge of the book. General age-related toning to text block throughout. Please see photos. Mary Hays (1759-1843) was a British writer and intellect who is considered an early feminist thinker.
