John Lempriere (c. 1765, Jersey – 1 February 1824, London) was an English classical scholar, lexicographer, theologian, teacher and headmaster. He was the son of Charles Lempriere (died 1801), of Mont au Pretre, Jersey. Lempriere may have been influenced by another Pembroke man, the lexicographer Dr Samuel Johnson, whose famous A Dictionary of the English Language had appeared in 1755. A little over thirty years later, around 1786, Lempriere started work on his own Classical dictionary. CONDITION In a morocco binding. Externally, heavily worn. The boards are rubbed with some areas of loss, and the spine is almost entirely gone. The boards are detached from the text block. There are also some closed tears and a little loss to the front pastedown, free endpaper and title page, a wax stamp to the rear pastedown, and some marks to the fore-edge. Internally, the binding is strained in places and the last few pages at the rear are loose, possibly with a few missing. There is some spotting throughout and the final 6 pages at the rear are creased with numerous closed tears and some loss. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

Excellent in every respect; much better than originally described and pictured. The shipping was exceptionally fast, and the books arrived precisely on schedule. The packaging was both robust and thoughtful, which always makes a most distinct difference. I am grateful for this great value and for your having accepted my offer. Thank you so much for a truly pluperfect transaction.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
