Description

Meditations and Contemplations, In Two Volumes (bound as one), James Hervey, Soule & T. Mason, New York, 1816, 206 pp, 199 pp, full leather, 5.5 x 3.25”, 32mo. In fair condition. Light wear to extremities. Typical dryness and scratching to surface of boards. Corners and extremes rubbed. Numerous old hand inscriptions throughout end papers. Front flyleaf torn at bottom right corner. Textblock moderately toned with instances of dampness staining and foxing throughout. Binding tight and intact. A sturdy little book. Please see photos. Author James Hervy was born at Hardingstone, near Northampton, and was educated at the grammar school of Northampton, and at Lincoln College, Oxford. Here he came under the influence of John Wesley and the Oxford Methodists, especially since he was a member of the Holy Club. Ultimately, however, while retaining his regard for the men and his sympathy with their religious aims, he adopted a thoroughly Calvinistic creed, and resolved to remain in the Anglican Church. His style is often bombastic, but he displays a rare appreciation of natural beauty, and his simple piety made him many friends. His earliest work, Meditations and Contemplations, said to have been modeled on Robert Boyle's Occasional Réflexions on various Subjects, within fourteen years passed through as many editions. Just picked up my package from Robin Rare Books and let me start by saying WOW!!! Book as advertised for sure. the value of the book certainly dictated some care in shipping but never did I think to this extent. The packaging was incredible. bigger box than needed at first thought but after opening based on the care and multiple layers of packing It would have survived a Tank rolling over it. Very grateful for you listing and working with me on the book, true piece of history I will cherish

I recently discovered Folio Society books and purchased a number of them from this site to add to my library of Easton Press books. I had a positive experience with each seller. They carefully wrapped the books in packing material to prevent damage during shipping. The books arrived in the condition described. I am looking forward to reading each and every one. I recommend them all.

Everything about this purchase exceeded my expectations. The book was as described and my offer was accepted, which is of great value to me. The book was lovingly packed with many layers and protection, which this older book deserved. The cherry on the top was I received the book days before expected. Great seller, highly recommend.
