Vol. IV: Teatro Modero, 1820. 644 p. In fair condition. Both boards of Vol. I detached from binding. Front hinge cracked at head of Vol. III, board attached via cording only. Boards are normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Top and bottom compartments of Vol. I chipped with exposed binding. Heads and tails of other volumes are scuffed with some chipping; gilt lettering and deco on spines normally dulled, but overall attractive. Edges of text-blocks marbled (Dulled). Spines tanned from shelf-wear. All front fly-leafs exhibit old-hand ownership inscriptions: "J. N. Gladstone/ Seaforth/ Nov. 1831". Light off-setting on title pages of volumes with frontispieces. Normal toning and age-staining throughout text-blocks. Front gutters shaken. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Seaforth House was a mansion in Seaforth, Merseyside, England, built in 1813 fo r Sir John Gladstone, father of William Ewart Gladstone who was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom four times. Captain John Neilson Gladstone, RN (1807 – 1863) was a British Conservative Party politician and an officer in the Royal Navy. He was the fourth child of Sir John Gladstone, a Scottish-born businessman who settled in Liverpool and made a large fortune initially from trading in corn with the United States and cotton with Brazil, and later through sugar plantations in Jamaica. His mother was Anne MacKenzie née Robertson, from Dingwall. His younger brother was the politician William Ewart Gladstone, later British Prime Minister, and his elder brother Thomas was also an MP. He attended Eton and then Christ Church, Oxford. The first volume of the collection reviewed, published in 1817, edition and introduction by Ángel Anaya , includes an introduction to Spanish Theatre (pp. iii-xxviii ) with brief sections devoted to Cervantes, Lope de Vega, Calderón de la Barca, Moreto, Rojas, Tirso de Molina, Solis and Moratin. Each play is also introduced by a short account of the plot and some comments. Volume I contains plays by Cervantes and Lope de Vega; Volumes II y III contain plays by Calderón de la Barca; Volume IV contains plays by Moratin.
