Complete in two volumes. Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece, four folding plates, and four plates. Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece, and three plates. Collated, complete. An extra illustrated copy, with three additional plates to Volume I. The important memoirs of John Evelyn. Evelyn's memoirs span from 1640 to 1706, and detail fantastic insights into prominent events throughout that era, including the execution of Charles I, the rise of Oliver Cromwell, Charles II coming to the throne, the Great Plague of London, and the 1666 Great Fire of London. This edition includes the private correspondence of King Charles I and Sir Edward Nicholas. Edited from the original manuscript by William Bray. CONDITION In a full calf binding, rebacked with the original boards and spines restored. Externally, generally smart. Spines are discoloured and worn, with loss to the leather prior to rebacking. Minor bumping to the extremities. Light marks to the boards and spines, and a little discolouration to the extremities. A small amount of lifting to the head of the spine of Volume I. Light rubbing to the boards. Leather is lifting to the tail of the front joint of Volume I. Spots to the endpapers. Bookseller's label to the front paste downs. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright with some scattered spots, spotting heavier to the first and last few pages. Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
