Patrick Colquhoun was the founder of the first regular preventive police in England, namely the Thames River Police. A Scottish economist, he is known for having provided theoretical support for police reforms in A Treatise on the Police Metropolis in 1796, in which he applies business principles to police administration - allowing him to achieve a full-time salary for officers prohibited from taking private fees. Historians credit Colquhoun's ideas as a critical development leading up to Robert Peel's "new" police three decades later. Illustrated with a frontispiece. CONDITION In the original publisher's half morocco binding over paper covered boards. Externally smart with some shelf wear and rubbing to the spine and extremities, with a mark to the rear board, as well as some scuffing to the leather to the rear board. Internally, firmly bound. With a minor offsetting to the title page, otherwise pages are bright and clean. Illustrated with a frontispiece. Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

Excellent in every respect; much better than originally described and pictured. The shipping was exceptionally fast, and the books arrived precisely on schedule. The packaging was both robust and thoughtful, which always makes a most distinct difference. I am grateful for this great value and for your having accepted my offer. Thank you so much for a truly pluperfect transaction.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
