William Lord Russell was an English politician. He was a leading member of the Country Party, forerunners of the Whigs, who during the reign of King Charles II, laid the groundwork for opposition in the House of Commons to the accession of an openly Catholic king in Charles's brother James. This work on his life is two volumes bound in one. It contains a frontispiece portrait of him, engraved by James Fittler. It also contains a folding plate of a facsimile letters from Lord Russell and Lady Russell. Lady Russell, or Rachael Wriothesley, was an English noblewoman, heiress, and author. Her second husband was William, Lord Russell, who was implicated in the Rye House Plot and later executed. This work on her life was edited by Mary Berry, the editor of Madame Du Defand's Letters. It also includes a series of letters from Lady Russell to her husband from 1672 to 1682 as well as some miscellaneous letters to and from Lady Russell. Both works contain a previous owner's ink inscription to the front free-endpapers: 'W.R. Harper, 1843'. CONDITION Bound in half calf with marble covered boards. Externally, lovely with very minor shelf wear only. Previous owner's signature to the front free-endpaper of each volume. Internally, firmly bound. Internally, the odd spot and handling mark on pages of both volumes. Otherwise, pages generally clean.
