MYT.) and Volume 3 (NAAM. ? ZIPOE) (Missing Volume 1) Haut-Coeur et Gayet, Paris 1821 (V1) and 1822 (V2). First editions. In French. Half leather. Color paper-covered boards with black leather ribbed spines, gilt spine titles, marbled pastedowns and endpapers, marbled page edges, 69 (combined total) nice engraved full page plates, each with 12 portraits, of some of the persons included in the dictionary in the rear of the volumes. Handsome personal bookplate of Patrice Salin on front pastedowns. It includes his motto: " Tel que je suis, prends moi." [See French Book-plates: A Handbook for Ex-libris Collectors. Walter Hamilton ? 1892]. Patrice Salin was the director of the library and archives of the Conseil d'Etat at the time the famous library in the Palais d?Orsay was burnt by the Communards during the suppression of the Paris Commune in 1871. A great many irreplaceable manuscripts and rare books were destroyed in that fire. Salin was one of the authors of the catalogue raisonne that was published subsequently that described the destroyed books. ?Étienne-Gabriel Peignot was a French bibliographer, born at Arc-in-Barrois (Haute-Marne) on May 15 1767, died in Dijon on August 14 1849. Initially lawyer in Besancon, Gabriel Peignot was a librarian and inspector of various institutions, successively: librarian of the central School of the Haute-Saône with Vesoul under the Directory, the chief of the college of Vesoul in 1803, inspector of the book shop in Dijon in 1813, headmaster of the college of this city in 1815 and inspector of the studies of the Academy of Saone-et-Loire. He was member of the Celtic Academy of Paris, and several literary companies. He was one of the most famous authors of bibliographical works of his time. Pierre Larousse indicates in his edition of the XIXe century that ?Peignot was the most erudite bibliographer of this century. His scholarship was immense. To the thorough science of the books, he joined an enlightened criticism. [...] His bibliographical taste had become a passion whose old books were mainly the object. This scholar spiritual and merry, hard and not involved, composed an innumerable quantity of small writings, the majority drawn with small number, and extremely required of the curious one; they treat characteristics prickly or little known.? ? Shipments to Alaska, Hawaii, APO and other off-shore addresses take longer to arrive. During the pre-Christmas season, Media Mail is subject to delays. When filling out the Ebay Detailed Seller Ratings, please keep in mind that the sometime slow arrival is due to the performance of the Postal Service and not to any tardiness on the part of the seller. For most books, we charge between two and nine dollars for this service, including delivery confirmation and insurance. For heavy sets or high-value books, the charge may be higher. Purchase from as far away as NZ was unusual but the postage options etc were promptly given and the book bought, which arrived after only 2 weeks or so, and in excellent condition - thanks seller and postal services! If I hadn't been so keen to get the book - and now delighted with it - the post alone ~ NZ$100 might have been an obstacle. Fortunately I am rarely tempted to spend so many $$$ for one book so took my chances with delivery etc. Glad I did - book at least as good as described.
