Published posthumously, this autobiography is Vittorio Alfieri's chief work of prose. An Italian dramatist and poet, Alfieri is often considered to be the 'founder of Italian tragedy'. He composed nineteen tragedies, alongside sonnets, satires and epigrams. Despite a dramatic and troubled existence, this work is surprising in the cold and languid gravity he applies to the most interesting adventures and strongest passions of his life in nineteenth century Italy. These works are bound with their individual title pages, and with an illustrated frontispiece to each volume. CONDITION In the original half vellum binding with cloth covered boards. Marks to the boards, age toning to back strip. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
