Written by Roger North, an English lawyer and biographer who here details the lives of his three brothers, the most famous being Francis and Dudley North, both eminent political figures in the courts of Charles II and James II. Francis North, Baron Guilford, had been an noted lawyer and Justice of the Common Pleas before being appointed Lord Keeper of the Great Seal in 1683. He sat as a judge on some of the Popish Plot trials, where Titus Oates made fictitious allegations of an extensive Catholic plot to assassinate King Charles II, leading to the execution of at least 22 men. Francis North was accused of excessive credulity in bowing to the anti-Catholic hysteria of the day. Dudley North was an English Merchant, politician and notable economist, knighted in 1683 and elected member of parliament in 1685. He held various positions due to his success and experience in trade, including as commissioner of customs and later of the treasury. Finally, the Reverend Dr Roger North was a professor of Greek and master of Trinity College, Cambridge in the late seventeenth century. He also served as Clerk of the Closet to King Charles II. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

Excellent in every respect; much better than originally described and pictured. The shipping was exceptionally fast, and the books arrived precisely on schedule. The packaging was both robust and thoughtful, which always makes a most distinct difference. I am grateful for this great value and for your having accepted my offer. Thank you so much for a truly pluperfect transaction.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
