Illustrated with a portrait frontispiece to volume I. An autobiography of the prolific playwright Frederic Reynolds, who during his literary career composed nearly one hundred tragedies and comedies. His first piece, 'Werter', was founded on Goethe's novel, and was first produced at the Bath Theatre on 25 November, 1785. In this work, Reynolds noted that, despite having written many successful works, he was not wealthy. In the conclusion, he writes that "[H]aving been omitted from many wills on account of my supposed wealth, I hope this true, and faithful exposition of the real state of my finance, may catch the eye of some rich testator, and induce him to make me reparation, by bequeathing me a thumping legacy." With the armorial bookplate of Miss Rigden, St. Lawrence, to front pastedowns. CONDITION In half calf bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Gilt detailing to back strips, with some discolouration. Otherwise, externally lovely. Hinges strained. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Offsetting to volume I title page, with light spotting to first few leaves of volume I.
