Complete in five volumes. Uniformly bound in full brown calf, with decorative gilt to the spines. 'The Memoirs of John Evelyn' comprise the English writer's diaries, and letters, to which is subjoined the private correspondence of King Charles I and Sir Edward Nicholas. Evelyn's diary, or memoir, spans the period of his adulthood to the year he died in 1706, providing insight into the life and events of a time before the publication of newspapers and magazines, making it a key source to modern historians. Historical events covered include the execution of Charles I, Oliver Cromwell's rise and death and the Great Fire of London in 1666. William Bray's edition of the work was assisted by William Upcott, who had access to Evelyn's family archives. With a frontispiece to all volumes, three folding plates to the beginning of Volume I and two plates to Volume II. CONDITION Uniformly bound in full brown calf, with decorative gilt to the spines. Externally, smart, with rubbing to the extremities and marks to the boards. With the spine title label to Volume IV rubbed off. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are generally bright and clean, with scattered spotting to the endpapers and the odd spot to the contents. Contemporary ink inscription to the front free endpaper of Volume I. Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
