Engraved allegorical frontis to volume 1. Bound in contemporary half pink calf [now faded to tan], over marbled paper, titles gilt within gilt linings, edges red speckled. Essentially two very good volumes, contents tight throughout in the period binding, paper just lightly toned, but foxed to the frontis and first blanks of volume 1 with some offsetting to the title page, and similarly, some foxing to the prelims of vol 2. Covers lightly rubbed and bumped, but the leather backing is now rather dry, with a crack beginning to the top outer hinge of volume 1. A pleasant set , by an anonymous, probably provincial binder, but a master of his craft. Proof indeed that simplicity can be more beautiful than ornament.
