The diaries of Ralph Thoresby, an English antiquarian, born in Leeds and widely credited with being the first historian of the city. He was a merchant, a nonconformist, fellow of the Royal Society, diarist, author, common-councilman in the Corporation of Leeds, and museum keeper. Now first published from the original manuscript by the Reverend Joseph Hunter, an English Unitarian Minister, antiquarian, and deputy keeper of public records. Letters of Eminent Men Addressed to Ralph Thoresby, 1832. Complete in two volumes. A catalogue of correspondence written to Ralph Thoresby, from important individuals including: Reverend Richard Stretton, Dr. Nathaniel Johnson, James Illingworth, Bryan Fairfax, and Philip Lord Wharton. With the bookplate of William Alfred Westropp Foyle, a British bookseller and businessman who co-founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 with his brother Gilbert Foyle. Previously held in the library of Christopher Foyle, a British philanthropist and owner of Foyle's bookshop. Bound by A. Sotheran & Co., London. CONDITION Bound in half blue crushed morocco with blue cloth boards. Externally, very smart with light rubbing to the extremities and light fading to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean with the odd small spot. Previous owner's bookplate to the front pastedown.
