Samuel Johnson was an English author, well-known in the literary world for his many lasting contributions to various areas of humanist art, including poetry, essay-writing, biography, and more. He is described by the 'Oxford Dictionary of National Biographies' as the most distinguished man of letters in English history. Including 'A Journal of his Tour to the Hebrides.' With additions of anecdotes by Hawkins, Piozzi, Murphym Tyers, Reynolds, Steevens, and notes by various hands. Also featuring the original texts, augmented by the additional writings of the biographer and his subject. This biography is notable for its extensive reports of Johnson's conversation, compiled through Boswell's acquaintance of Johnson since 1763. CONDITION Bound in half green calf with marbled boards. Externally, sound with rubbing and light bumping to the extremities. Fading to the spines with the odd mark to the boards. Minor loss to the head and tail of the spines as well as the board tips. Small cracks to the joints at the head and tail. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd small spot and light age toning to the extremities. The odd small handling mark or pencil annotation. Contemporary ink inscription to the front endpaper of volume one and the title page of the odd volume. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
