Sir Henry Slingsby was a Royalist who supported Charles I during the Civil War. After the defeat of the Royalists, he was arrested and charged with high treason. He was hung, drawn and quartered in 1658. Despite his controversial political views and actions, Slingsby was also known for his contributions to science and technology. He was a member of the Royal Society and made several important advances in the fields of chemistry and metallurgy, including the development of a new method for making gunpowder. This work, compiled by Daniel Parsons, combines Slingsby's own diary - here first published from the original manuscript - alongside a reprint of his trial, a tract he wrote shortly before his death while in the Tower of London, extracts from his family papers, and a genealogical memoir. With the inscription of A. Thompson to a front blank. An exceptionally bright copy of this very scarce work, bound with brass edges. CONDITION In a full calf binding, with gilt detailing to back strip and brass edges to boards. Minor rubbing to joints, with a small area of rubbing towards the tail of the front board. Inscription to a front blank. Internally, firmly bound. Pages exceptionally clean and bright. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
