The first edition thus, being the first US edition. A detailed and favourable biography on the life of Lord Byron, the noted and infamous Romantic poet. Illustrated with a frontispiece to each volume. Written by Thomas Moore, a close friend of Byron. Moore was trusted with the memoirs of Byron, and was advised to burn them upon Byron's death. CONDITION In a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally, generally smart. Some fading to the spine. Some marks and rubbing to the boards and spines. A little bumping to the extremities. Spots to the endpapers. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with just a few spots. Tidemark to the first few and last few pages of Volume I. Tear to the last two leaves of Volume I, pages 607/608 and 609, with loss only to the pagination of pages 607/608, and some loss to four lines to the head of page 609. Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
