The letters of Horatio Walpole, better known as Horace Walpole, was an English writer, art historian, man of letters, antiquarian, and Whig politician. His literary reputation rests on the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto, and his Letters, which are of significant social and political interest. Volume one covers the period from 1735-1745. Volume two covers the period from 1744-1753. Volume three covers the period from 1753-1759. Volume four covers the period from 1762-1766. Volume five covers the period from 1765-1778. Volume six covers the period from 1778-1797. All volumes are from The Letters of Horace Walpole, Earl of Orford: Including Numerous Letters Now First Published from the Original Manuscripts, 1840, other than volume four which is from The Letters of Horace Walpole Earl of Orford, 1866, from a nine volume set. Edited by Peter Cunningham, a British writer. CONDITION In the original half crushed morocco with marbled boards. Externally, smart with rubbing resulting in light loss to the extremities. Fading to the spine with the odd mark to the boards. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with the odd spot. Light age toning and further spotting to the endpapers.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
