This work contains the memoirs of Samuel Fothergill in addition to a selection of his correspondence. His correspondence is of note as it contains passages from his trip to North America and the colonies. They provide an 18th century view of the American colonies and the Quaker religion. This work also comprises of an account of the life and travels of Samuel Fothergill's father, John Fothergill. To this is also added 'notices of some of his descendants'. Written and edited by George Crossfield. With the bookplate of someone with the last name Chapman-Purchas to the front pastedown. A gift notice to the recto of front endpaper 'Isaac and Mary Davis, From Their Affectionate Friends, Isabel Cassen and Vi. Priestman.' Another letter loosely inserted dated 1955 from one Edgar Rowth/Roath outlining his family history. CONDITION In a full calf binding with gilt stamping to the spine. Externally, generally smart with patches of heavy rubbing to the spine and extremities. Loss to the head of spine. Spine label is heavily rubbed. Bumping to the extremities. Prior owner's bookplate to the front pastedown, Chapman-Purchas. gift inscription pasted to the recto of front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are slightly age toned to edges with light spots to endpapers and the odd spot throughout. Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good.
