'Undine' is La Motte Fouque's most notable work and is a fairy-tale in which Undine, a water spirit, marries a knight named Huldebrand in order to gain a soul. 'The White Lady' is a story based upon the legend of the White Lady Ghost, said to haunt castles of several European aristocratic families. Featuring a bookplate of a 'Henry Lloyd Gibbs' tipped to the front pastedown. In a lovely half polished calf binding with marbled paper boards, and endpapers.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
