A touching biography on Colonel Francis Skelly Tidy, written by his daughter, Harriet Ward. This detailed biography follows Tidy's career from when he entered the army in 1792 to his eventual death in 1835. In 1793, just one year into his career, Tidy was dispatched to the West Indies. During his long military career he was present at many important events, such as the siege of Fort Bourbon, and Waterloo. He was captured at Barville and held captive for fifteen months. Tidy's daughter, Harriet Ward, was a notable author who wrote much about South Africa. She is best known today for her non-fiction 'Five Years in Kaffirland', and for her novel, the first English novel set entirely in England, 'Jasper Lyle'. 'Recollections of an Old Soldier' is an insightful biography that spans the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars. Newspaper clipping from the 'Daily Telegraph' in 1996 tipped in to the recto of the front free endpaper, 'Waterloo relic is returned to regiment'; the article recounts how Tidy's Waterloo medal was stolen and return to the regiment. CONDITION In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally, smart. Leather is a little discoloured with light rubbing to the boards and raised bands. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

Excellent in every respect; much better than originally described and pictured. The shipping was exceptionally fast, and the books arrived precisely on schedule. The packaging was both robust and thoughtful, which always makes a most distinct difference. I am grateful for this great value and for your having accepted my offer. Thank you so much for a truly pluperfect transaction.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
