This work tells the story of the life of British painter, Thomas Stothard, who is best known for his engravings and illustrative plates. Stothard provided illustrations for many important works, including Daniel Defoe's 'Robinson Crusoe', John Bunyan's 'The Pilgrim's Progress' and Alexander Pope's 'The Rape of the Lock'. This biographical work was written by Stothard's daughter-in-law, Anna Elizabeth Bray, an English novelist and writer. The work contains many personal reminiscences, with Bray's insight making it all the more poignant. Illustrated with a vignette title page and fifty-five in-text engravings throughout. With a frontispiece of Thomas Stothard. Illustrations are a facsimile of various pen and ink sketches by Stothard for Roger's Poems, in the possession of Miss Denman. With a small cutting from an early sale of this work, dated 1851, with a description of the work priced at £1 10s. Bound with sixteen leaves of publisher's advertisements to the rear of the work. CONDITION In full calf binding, with gilt tooling to the boards and to the spine. Externally, smart, with light rubbing to the joints and to the extremities. Cracking to front joint. The odd mark to boards. With a small cutting from an early sale of this work, dated 1851, stuck to the front paste down. Hinges slightly strained. Slight rubbing to front endpapers. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean, with light damp staining to the lower half of the work, near the gutter and to the extremities of the page. This does not affect the text or illustrations. Very speedy delivery and extremely well packaged. The book is in wonderful condition for age, better I think than described. This now sits alongside a companion volume, another work of Worcestershire historian and antiquarian, John Noak. I very much looking forward to reading it. As for price, I snatched the offer and am extremely pleased that I did. This seller is a perfect find on eBay and I would purchase from them without hesitation, saved seller, excellent.
