The biography of noted member of the mid eighteenth-century French court, Jeanne Antoinette Poisson, Marquise de Pompadour. La Comtesse du Barry , published in 1858. The biography of the chief royal mistress of Louis XV of France, Jeanne Becu, Comtesse du Barry. She was one of the victims of the Reign of Terror during the French Revolution. Mademoiselle de la Valliere, et Les Favorites Des Trois Ages de Louise XIV , published in 1859. The biography of Louise de La Valliere, a mistress of King Louis XIV of France from 1661 to 1667. Agnes Sorel et La Chevalerie , published in 1860. The biography of King Charles II's favourite mistress, Agnes Sorel, known by the sobriquet Dame de Beaute. Jean-Baptiste Capefigue (1801-1872) was a French historian and biographer. Born in Marseille, he moved to Paris at age twenty to study journalism. He often wrote biographies of famous women, and his well known biographies, in addition to the ones in this set, include that of Catherine de'Medici, Anne of Austria, Maria Theresa of Austria, Catherine II of Russia, Elizabeth I of England, and more. CONDITION Uniformly bound in quarter morocco with paper covered boards. Externally, some rubbing to the spines and joints. This has resulted in a small amount of loss to the heads and tails of the spines, most notable to 'Agnes Sorel' and 'La Marquise de Pompadour'. Numbered bookplates to the half title pages of each volume. Internally, hinges slightly strained but firm. All volumes firmly bound. Scattered spots to the first few pages of each volume, and the odd spot and handling mark throughout, otherwise pages are generally bright and clean. Overall Condition: Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
