Two volumes, complete set. Illustrated with monochrome frontispieces. In a uniform full calf binding with gilt details to the spines. Bookplate belonging to Arnold Haskell, a British dance critic, designed by Michael Ayrton, a British artist. This two volume work on Mrs Piozzi was edited by A. Haywood with an introductory account of Piozzi's life and writings. Mrs Piozzi, otherwise known as Hester Thrale, was a Welsh-born diarist, author and socialite who is best known for her friendship with Samuel Johnson, with her diaries and correspondences with the noted author providing important biographical information on the life of Johnson. This work includes her memoirs, letters and notes, including new anecdotes on Johnson which had not been previously published. CONDITION Bound in full calf. Externally smart with fading to the spines, slight marks to the boards, and only mild rubbing to the extremities and joints. Bookplate belonging to 'Arnold Haskell' to the front pastedown. Internally firmly bound with lightly age toned and clean pages with spotting just to the front and rear.
