It is the Eighth Edition of "Jesus", authored by Ernest Renan and published by Michel Levy Freres of Paris. HALF LEATHER with four raised spine bands, rubbed gilt letters. Marble boards with moderate corner and top/bottom spine wear, decorative marble (not same pattern) endpapers, light browned initial pages before the book, lighter pages thereafter, attached ribbon, light foxing throughout with heavier foxing near the end, but only marks on the pages not affecting text and readability at all. 262 solidly bound pages, no interior marks of any kind. On the author from Wikipedia: "Joseph Ernest Renan (French: [ʁənɑ̃]; 27 February 1823 – 2 October 1892) was a French Orientalist and Semitic scholar, expert of Semitic languages and civilizations, historian of religion, philologist, philosopher, biblical scholar and critic. He is best known for his influential and pioneering historical works on the origins of early Christianity, and his political theories, especially concerning nationalism and national identity. Renan is credited as being among the first scholars to advance the now-discredited Khazar theory, which held that Ashkenazi Jews were descendants of the Khazars, Turkic peoples who had adopted Jewish religion and migrated to Western Europe following the collapse of their khanate."
