Complete in two volumes. Scottish Orientalist and geographer Colonel Sir Henry Yule correlates the famous travels of the Venetian Marco Polo with their present day locations, clarifying his routes by identifying the medieval geographic place names used by Polo and his transcribers, and matching them with their present-day locations and names. With has a frontispiece and illuminated title page to each volume. With numerous vignette and full page illustrations to each volume, and with sixteen further plates and folding maps - many in colour - to volume I, and a further sixteen to volume II. Collated, complete. From the library of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey, with his morocco bookplate to the front pastedowns. William Foyle founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England. CONDITION In half morocco signed bindings, with cloth covered boards. Externally, excellent, but with light marks to back strips. Bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright, with only the odd spot or light handling mark.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
