Collated, complete. Retaining the original half titles. Alexander Gilchrist was an English author, known chiefly as a biographer for William Etty and William Blake. The work is considered the standard reference work on Blake, with Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his brother William Michael Rossetti both offering contributions. Gilchrist spent many years compiling the material and interviewing Blake's surviving friends, although the work was originally left incomplete following Gilchrist's sudden death from Scarlet Fever in 1861. The work was first published two years later, having been complete by his wife Anne Gilchrist. CONDITION In half morocco bindings, with marbled paper covered boards. Light fading to back strips, as is expected with green morocco. A touch of rubbing to joint heads, otherwise externally lovely. Small bookplates to front pastedowns. Internally, firmly bound. Pages bright and generally clean, with only the odd spot and handling mark. A small number of neat pencil inscriptions to volume I. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

Excellent in every respect; much better than originally described and pictured. The shipping was exceptionally fast, and the books arrived precisely on schedule. The packaging was both robust and thoughtful, which always makes a most distinct difference. I am grateful for this great value and for your having accepted my offer. Thank you so much for a truly pluperfect transaction.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
