Maxwell's acclaimed biography of Victorian military and political figure, Arthur Wellesley, the First Duke of Wellington. With frontispiece and twelve plates, collated and complete, as well as numerous in-text wood engravings, and a folding map with a plan of the battle of Waterloo. This condensed version of Maxwell's detailed work offers a popular account of the general, famed for his superior defensive tactics in the Napoleonic wars. Although predominantly Maxwell's work, the new edition has been altered where new information has arisen, and the editor has added short chapter on the political career of the Duke, who served as Conservative prime minister between 1828 and 1830, and briefly again in 1834. Maxwell claimed to have served at the Peninsular campaign and the Battle of Waterloo himself, but this is generally believed to be untrue. As well as this biography, the Irish author also wrote military novels, and was a key proponent of rollicking military fiction. CONDITION In full calf binding. Externally, smart. Lightly rubbed to the front board and the joints. A little bumped to the head of the spine, with some marginal wear to the extremities. Rear hinge starting, but firm. Internally, firmly bound. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

Excellent in every respect; much better than originally described and pictured. The shipping was exceptionally fast, and the books arrived precisely on schedule. The packaging was both robust and thoughtful, which always makes a most distinct difference. I am grateful for this great value and for your having accepted my offer. Thank you so much for a truly pluperfect transaction.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
