New edition. Containing all words in common use to be found in polite literature, with their etymology and affinities; the phraseology employed in trade, commerce and manufactures; terms of art and science; military and naval terms; and geographical and historical proper names. Bookplate to the front paste down of each volume, showing that this collection once belonged to Sir William Eden, 7th and 5th Baronet (1849-1915). Sir William was a British politician, former colonel and local magistrate, described as eccentric and often foul-tempered. He was also a talented watercolourist, who exhibited regularly in London and Paris, and a collector of Impressionist art. CONDITION In the original half calf binding with green boards. Externally, very smart with light bumping to the extremities and the odd mark to the board. Rubbing to the front board of volume two. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean with light age toning to the extremities.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
