Edited by Darwin's son Francis, a British botanist known for his works in phototropism. As well as the letters of Charles Darwin, Francis also edited his autobiography and Thomas Huxley's 'On the Reception of the Origin of Species'. The fifth thousandth, revised, and complete in three volumes. From the library of Audrey Pleydell-Bouverie, an English socialite and the illegitimate granddaughter of King Edward VII. She was featured by Cecil Beaton in 'The Book of Beauty'. Amongst her circle were Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon, Coco Chanel, Salvador Dali, Winston and Clementine Churchill and Nancy Mitford. Each volume is illustrated with a frontispiece portrait of the iconic naturalist. Volume I contains a family tree, volume II a facsimile from one of Darwin's diaries, and volume III has a loosely inserted photograph of a Darwin statue and a newspaper clipping pasted to the tissue-guard for the frontispiece. CONDITION In a half crushed morocco binding. Externally generally smart, with some slight rubbing to the head of the volumes and to the raised bands. Extremities also have a little rubbing; volume III is a little faded to the front board. Ownership inscription to the front endpaper of each volume; the residual marks from a removed ownership bookplate to the front pastedown of volume III. Internally, generally firmly bound; a slight strain to the hinges of each volume, which remain firm. Pages have just the odd instance of spotting. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

Excellent in every respect; much better than originally described and pictured. The shipping was exceptionally fast, and the books arrived precisely on schedule. The packaging was both robust and thoughtful, which always makes a most distinct difference. I am grateful for this great value and for your having accepted my offer. Thank you so much for a truly pluperfect transaction.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
