Bound in quarter-morocco on cloth boards. Illustrations include a colour frontispiece, twenty-three colour plates, and numerous in-text illustrations. This is an informative work on various important military figures in France, including Gunner Bricard, Marshal Bugeaud, Captain Coignet, and Napoleon Bonaparte. Written by Charles Bigot, this text borrows heavily from each of the figure's own memoirs. Charles Jules Bigot (1840-1893) was a French writer, teacher, art critic, and journalist. Bigot was briefly prefect of Indre between September and November 1870. He was named Chevalier of the Legion of Honor in 1887. With an illustrated bookplate on front paste down and a prize bookplate from Societe Nationale des Professeurs de Francais en Angleterre to front endpaper. These belong to Charles Edward Dunscomb Bridge, who was a British Army Captain for the Royal Artillery from 1916 to 1917. Collated, complete. CONDITION Bound in quarter-morocco on cloth boards. Externally, very smart. Light wear to extremities and spine, with a bit of rubbing to raised bands of joints. A few marks to boards, with particular marks and fading to rear board. Prior owner's illustrated bookplate to front paste down, with prize bookplate to front endpaper. Front hinge is starting. Front endpapers, free endpapers, and frontispiece has detached from binding. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very clean with light age-toning to pages. The first few pages of text are beginning to detach from the binding. Overall Condition: Very Good GLOSSARY OF TERMS Overall Condition (Dustwrapper condition rating is shown after that for the book itself, where a dustwrapper is present) Fine - Very well preserved copy showing very little wear Very Good Indeed - Only one or two minor faults, really a very attractive copy Very Good - Quite a wide term meaning no major faults but probably several smaller ones often expected given the age of the book, but still a respectable copy Good - Meaning not very good. Some more serious faults as will be described in the condition report under 'condition' Good Only - Meaning one or more faults that could really do with repair Fair - As with good only above but with other faults leaving a compromised copy even after repair Poor - Really bad and possibly seriously incomplete.     I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.
