He then ruled the British Isles as Lord Protector from 1635 to 1658. The first limited edition of 1899 of one thousand four hundred and seventy five copies printed on fine paper. This copy is an out of series presentation copy inscribed in ink 'Presentation Copy' to the limitation page. Written by Samuel Rawson Gardiner, historian specialising in the seventeenth century England and the English Civil War. The present volume comprises a significant evaluation of the person behind the controversial general, who is often seen either as a revolutionary or a tyrant. Gardiner explores the life of Cromwell as well as his political legacy. Despite the author was a descendant of Cromwell, this biography is mostly unbiased, presenting a great selection of material and opinions of many of Gardiner's contemporaries. I bought this for the copy's associations with a family I'm interested in, thanks to the suggestions about provenance in the seller's description. The description and photos told me all I needed to know about the book - clearly the right family, though I have my own view on the individual who owned it - but that is part of the fund of an old book. It arrived promptly - a couple of days' delay caused by UPS - safely packaged and a good price, I think.

The shipping was lightning fast, arriving in 3 days from UK to US. The book was packaged with extreme care, very important for an antique book. The overall condition of the book is also unbelievable for its age, even better than described. I’ve purchased numerous other books from this seller, and the quality and price have always been outstanding. Great eBay seller. Thanks!
